Looking Forward

Our four priority areas

'Closer, Deeper Further' - has been our enduring guiding vision, underpinned by prayer. Last year as a church and Church Council we reviewed our progress towards that vision and identified four priority areas for St. Gabriel's that we felt are important for our future mission:

Collective Prayer

We feel we have made most progress in this area, establishing more regular prayer meetings (weekly) but at different times and days in the week. We hope this allows the greatest number of people to participate. But there's lots more to do to ensure we keep prayer in many different forms and styles at the centre of who we are. In particular we would love to use other internet-based means of getting people to pray together on important topics and wish to explore this further

“My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations” Isaiah 56:7

Our Church Community

Our own teams and community need building up, and we identified a number of approaches that could help us towards this:

  • Working together where we have shared goals, passion & experience

  • Involvement in activities that impact on our community

  • Encouraging participation in small groups

  • More socialising

  • Embracing our diversity of gifts, backgrounds & perspectives

  • Supporting the people who are ‘pillars’ within our current community

“You will be my people, and I will be your God.”‭‭ Ezekiel‬ ‭36:28‬b

Local Community

People who are part of St. Gabriel's are already involved in many local community groups and we are aware of many others that we could connect with. To help us grow in this area we would love to:

  • Make time/space for people to do things outside the church (not overloading people with serving within church activities)

  • Organise social events with other organisations so we can learn about what they do (and for them to learn about us too)

  • Encourage people to find a friend to take along to something they want to be part of - ‘going out in twos’

  • Build awareness of all the dates of every groups’ activities (perhaps hosting a website for that) so that everyone knows what is going on

  • Help everyone identify their passion and help them explore and feed that passion by getting involved in something appropriate for them

Make Jesus known

We are already making Jesus known in many ways throughout the week. Building on that we came up with ideas on how we could strengthen this:
- Training people – building confidence & competence
- Unleash the power of story – fluency and seeing opportunity
- Encourage people to ‘step up’
- Enable people to strengthen their relationships with people outside church, so they can invite them in
- Expect God to speak every week when we meet

“Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy,

carrying sheaves with them.”‭‭ Psalm‬ ‭126:6

2018 Away Day reflections

As part of our 2018 Church Council away day, we reflected on what a guest speaker had to say to us about the future. These were the points that most resonated with those present:

  1.  Every person has unique talents and, as a church, we should help each person find the right way for them to contribute using their gifts

  2. Are we each being a "pillar" for St Gabriel's? We should stand strong as a pillar and pray, and sustain the pillars around us

  3. Togetherness is key - unity with God’s love – in worship & prayer

  4.  The leading of the Holy Spirit is fundamental

  5.  We need to spice things up & create space for new things.

  6.  Encouragement is key for us all – whatever the situation

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”‭‭  Acts‬ ‭2:17
